What Is A2P 10DLC? Business Texting Explained
Your business texts are not arriving, and nobody told you why. No error, no bounce, no warning — the message simply never shows up on the customer's phone. If that sounds familiar, the cause is very likely A2P 10DLC: the registration system US carriers use to decide which business texts get delivered and which get quietly blocked. Here is what it is, what it costs, and how to get through it.

This post is general information, not legal advice. Carrier rules and registration requirements change, so have a telecom lawyer review your own setup before you rely on it.
What A2P 10DLC actually is (in one paragraph, no jargon)
A2P 10DLC is the system that lets a business send text messages from an ordinary 10-digit phone number. “A2P” means application-to-person — a business system texting a person, rather than one person texting another. “10DLC” means a 10-digit long code, which is just a normal-looking phone number. Before you can send business texts from such a number, you must register two things with the carriers: your brand (who you are) and your campaign (what kind of messages you send).
It is a registration, done once per business and once per type of message, telling carriers your texts are legitimate rather than spam.
Why carriers started blocking unregistered texts
A few years ago, anyone could send bulk texts from an ordinary number, and spammers did — in huge volumes. Carriers responded by filtering aggressively, and legitimate small businesses got caught in the same net. Unregistered business traffic has been blocked since 1 September 2023, according to Twilio, and the filtering has only tightened since.
The carriers' answer was registration: tell them who you are and what you send, and they deliver your messages; do not, and they block you.
Brand vs campaign: the two registrations, and what each costs
Registration has two parts, and they cost different amounts. The brand registration identifies your business: its legal name, tax details, and type. Twilio's list prices (October 2026) put a Sole Proprietor brand at $4.50 and a Standard brand at $46. The campaign registration describes what you send — in our case, a missed-call text-back — and campaign vetting costs $15 one-time, with the campaign itself at $1.50–$10 a month.
Each message costs a little too — SMS about $0.0083 per segment plus a carrier fee of $0.0035–$0.005 — a few dollars a month for a small shop. Watch out for vendors who hide these fees inside a much larger monthly price.
How long approval takes — and why “live in 5 minutes” is a lie
Registration takes days, not minutes. The brand check and the campaign review are done by people and automated systems at the carriers, and they can come back with questions — a mismatch between your business name and your tax records, or a sample message that does not match what you actually send. Any vendor that promises you will be “live in five minutes” is either skipping registration (and your texts will be blocked) or selling you a shared number you do not control.
Plan for a few days at least. That is also why a 7-day trial is too short: if registration eats the first three days, you have barely tested anything. The audit behind this series recommends a 14-day live trial, with the clock starting at the first live text.
The three signs your texts are being filtered, not sent
The first sign is silence: customers say they never got your text, and you have no error to explain it. Carriers filter silently, so the absence of a bounce is not proof of delivery. The second sign is inconsistency: the same message reaches some customers and not others, because different carriers filter differently. The third sign is a sudden change: texts that delivered fine last month stop arriving after a carrier tightens its filters.
If you see any of these, check your registration status before blaming the tool: are your brand and campaign approved, and do your messages match the samples you submitted?
What to submit: sample messages that match your real first text
When you register a campaign, you must submit sample messages — the exact texts you plan to send. The carriers compare what you actually send against those samples, so the samples must match reality. If your sample says “Hi, this is [Business Name]. Sorry we missed your call” and your live text says something completely different, expect filtering.
Write your real first text first, then submit it as the sample. Keep it informational: your business name, an apology for the miss, a booking link, and an opt-out. Do not submit a tame sample and then send promotional messages — that mismatch is one of the fastest ways to get a campaign suspended. The consent half of this question is covered in our guide to whether it is legal to text back a missed call.
Who handles registration for you vs what you must do yourself
Some tools handle registration for you; others hand you a form and wish you luck. The difference matters, because the parts only you can do are the business details: your legal name, your tax ID, and confirming that the number is yours. A good provider does the filing, writes the sample messages with you, and chases the carriers when approval stalls.
When you compare tools, ask three questions: do you register the brand and campaign for me, on my own number, and what happens if approval is delayed? If the answer to the first is no, budget several hours of your own time and a few days of waiting. You can try the interactive demo to see the finished result — a text-back that arrives because the registration behind it is done properly.

Frequently asked questions
What is A2P 10DLC?
It is the US carriers' registration system for business texts sent from a 10-digit phone number. You register your brand (who you are) and your campaign (what you send), and the carriers use that to tell legitimate business texts apart from spam.
What happens if I send business texts without registering?
Unregistered business traffic has been blocked since 1 September 2023, according to Twilio. Your texts may be silently filtered — no error, no bounce, just never delivered.
How much does A2P 10DLC registration cost?
On Twilio's list prices (October 2026): a Sole Proprietor brand is $4.50, a Standard brand $46, campaign vetting $15 one-time, and the campaign itself $1.50–$10 a month. Each SMS is about $0.0083 per segment plus a carrier fee of $0.0035–$0.005.
How long does A2P 10DLC approval take?
Days, not minutes. Any vendor promising to be live in five minutes is either skipping registration or using a shared number you do not control. Plan for a few days, and longer if your business details need checking.
